Free adoption weekend brought to you by Mimi and Melody

Every once in a while, two little dogs can change a family’s world forever.

For Steven Kwong and Chan Wah, that happened the day Melody and Mimi trotted into their lives.

Two small dogs in a stroller, both dressed in red outfits with bows. Wooden floor background. The mood is cheerful and cozy.

Melody, a gentle Yorkshire Terrier with a sweet nature and a love of flowers, brought calm and joy to the household. She never missed a chance to pause on her walks and savor the scents along the way, reminding everyone to slow down and appreciate life’s simple pleasures.

Mimi, a tiny Pomeranian with a lion’s heart, was bold, spirited, and delightfully feisty. She perched at the window to wait for her family’s return, and greeted them at the door with an enthusiasm that lit up the whole house.

Though opposite in temperament – one serene, one fiery – the two were inseparable companions. They dressed up for holidays (Melody even won a Halloween contest dressed as Snow White, fitting for a dog who adored apples), shared stroller rides, and filled every day with laughter and love.

“They were more than pets,” Steven says. “They were family.”

When Melody passed away last fall, joining Mimi who had gone before her, Steven and Chan knew they wanted to honor the love and joy their dogs had given them. They chose to sponsor Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter’s Free Adoption Weekend, October 3–5, so other families could experience that same joy.

“We wanted to encourage people to adopt pets in need,” Steven explains. “Melody and Mimi gave us so much love, and this is our way of keeping their memory alive by helping other animals find homes.”

Mimi and a friend

During the weekend of October 3–5, all adoption fees at FAAS will be waived, thanks to this generous gift. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to open their hearts to a new best friend – while honoring two little dogs who made the world brighter.

As Steven and Chan put it: “Our lives changed because of Melody and Mimi. We hope many more lives will be changed during this special weekend.”

Giving a shelter pet a fresh start is the perfect way to keep Melody and Mimi’s legacy of love alive.
